Tutorial: // How To Install My Layouts
A few people have asked me how to install the base styles I make and post in my community. Instead of repeating everything in comments/emails, I have decided to make a tutorial. :)

While you are logged in, go here: Customize. If you are using "Old System (S1)," go to the drop down menu and choose "New System (S2)" and click "switch." Then go here: Your Layers.

Scroll to the bottom to where it says "Create Layer."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Where it says "Create layout-specific layer," Type: Theme, Layout: Component. Click "Create."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

^^ that's theme layer.

Now go back to where it says "Create layout-specific layer," Type: User, Layout: Component. Click "Create."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

^^ that's user layer.

Now, when you download a style from me, you'll find 3 text files. Onei s marked "LAYOUTNAME -- theme" and one is marked "LAYOUTNAME -- user." (The other is marked "readme" and along with the basic "CREDIT ME OR I'LL PEE ON YOU" message, is a link to component_help, a fantastic community dedicated to customizing the Component layout.)

Next to the new layers you've created, you see the LayerID >> Type >> Name. Look for "theme (none)," and after that a button that reads "Edit ... " Click edit and you see a boring page like this:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Open the "LAYOUTNAME -- theme" file I've sent you, select all, copy and paste into the theme layer then hit "Compile." If at the top it reads "No errors," you're home free. Click the "<< Your Layers" link at the top.

Go back to the layers you've created, and find LayerID >> Type >> Name. Look for "user (none)," and click edit.

Open the "LAYOUTNAME -- user" file I've sent you, select all, copy and paste into the user layer then hit "Compile." If at the top it reads "No errors," you're home free again!. Click the "<< Your Layers" link at the top and continue on to Your Styles.

Where it says "Create Style," type in whatever you want to name the style. I typed in "New Layout."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

You get to edit your style now. Follow these steps:

Language (i18nc): English
Layout: Component
click "Change."
Theme: LAYER NAME HERE
User: LAYER NAME HERE
Click "Save Changes."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Next to your new layout's name, you have 3 options. Edit, delete, and use. Select "Use" to ... use. Go back to your journal and you should see the new style.

BTW: The numbers you see next to your layout name is a link that leads you to a preview of your layout.

Hope that helps :)

Can I ask you a favor? I completely understand if you say no by the way... Your personal layout... I LOVE the style of it and I've looked through all of the component help communities.. but I can not for the life of me get my layout to come out like yours. I was wondering if it were at all possinle if I could have the style sheet layout that you have I won't use your images but I will credit you. Again, I realise that I may over stepping, but I would sincerely appreciate it.Thank you so much.

That's okay with me. :) Do you want the style sheets to the layout for my personal journal or for frenchie_icons?

For your personal if that's alright. The one you have now. My email is rubbersoul79@livejournal.com

I also e-mailed about the component layout you did a while back, so thank you for that, as well as being so nice.

(lol ... your icon :-P)

You're welcome. I figured out the component style because I liked the layout at component_help, and they were nice enough to let me use their layout as a base. Might as well do the same. :-)

Thank you :) I will credit. (my journal is friends only, but I have a public post where all my credits go, I'll most likely put it there or in the user page, just so you know).

*cry* i have been working on this since forever! the first time i got the layout up.. i thought i knew what i was doing.. and none of the user stuff you sent was actually up.. just the theme. so, i went back and deleted all of that to start over, once i found your tutorial.. and now im at the part where it asks me to create the style and make a name... and i get this:

You have reached your maximum number of styles.

i thought it had to do with having too many other styles.. so, i deleted virtually all of them (ones i have created.. NOT the wizard ones) - and yet i still keep getting this. i have even tried to logout and htne log back in . sigh. this is so difficult for me to get right! haha. thank you in advance.

I'm not sure what to tell you. I've gotten the "maximun number of styles" before but I always delete an old one and I can continue. *shrugs*

I was just wondering how you created your style for s2? I am having the same problem as you where it says I have reached the maxiun number of styles. I didn't even have any of my own. :-( Could ya please point me in the right direction. Thanks!

If I wanted to chenge the colors, do I go to the other page where the tabs are at the top to edit or do I do it in the layout with all the codes? I hope this makes sense.

the set commands in the user layer should take care of that.

Sorry to bother you, but i was wanting to use your (brian & Justin) layout from the cherrystyle website, but i am having a problem.

I followed this tutorial and everything seems fine, but when i went and replaced the URL for the header it will not show up. it's just a red X that says trble # lj dot com. Do you happen to know what the problem could be?

add this to the layer

layerinfo "source_viewable" = "1";

then give me the id number to that layer and I'll try and figure it out.

I added it with the other layerinfo codes and it still wont show up.

The theme ID is 5295349

Okay, for one thing, remove this at the very top:

layerinfo "type" = "theme";
layerinfo "name" = "";

And the reason the image isn't showing up is because you haven't given a image url. This (http://www.yourimagehost.com/bjshineimg1.jpg) is just an example. You need to upload the image to your own photo service and provite the url.

I am sorry to bother you but I am using one of your layout which I have customized, and now the icon community shows for the communities on my friends page. How do I change that so I can see the user icon instead?
